Deciphering Transcriptional Regulation of Human Core Promoters

Despite its pivotal role in regulating transcription, our understanding of core promoter function, architecture, and cis-regulatory elements is lacking. Here, we devised a highthroughput assay to quantify the activity of ~15,000 fully designed core promoters that we integrated and expressed from a fixed location within the human genome. We find that core promoters drive transcription unidirecti...

Internal carotid artery occlusion caused by giant cell arteritis.

A case of hemiplegia in a 46 year old woman is described. Total occlusion of the right internal carotid artery was discovered at angiography. Because of persistent elevation of the ESR, and characteristic plasma protein abnormalities, biopsy of the temporal artery was carried out and demonstrated the typical features of giant cell arteritis.

Intestinal occlusion caused by endometriosis of the sigmoid colon.

Endometriosis (E) is an estrogen-dependent inflammatory disorder that is observed in approximately 10% of women in childbearing age, and is the most common benign gynecological disorder requiring hospitalization. In 5% of cases, there is an involvement of the gastrointestinal tract, for the most part of the sigmoid colon and rectum (~ 90%). However intestinal obstruction due to severe stenosis ...

Cholinergic mechanism for intestinal hypermotility caused by arterial occlusion.

A post-mortem vigorous movement of the intestine is a common finding in the rabbit. WARMOES (1925) studied this phenomenon and concluded that the increased intestinal motility would be due to the agony of the intramural nerve plexus, since the enhanced intestinal motility survived after section of both vagi and transection of the mesentery while it was abolished by either cocaine or nicotine. J...

Branch Retinal Artery Occlusion Caused by Toxoplasmosis in an Adolescent

PURPOSE Branch retinal artery occlusion (BRAO), while not uncommon in elderly patient populations, is rare in children and adolescents. We report a case of a BRAO secondary to toxoplasmosis in this demographic. CASE A previously healthy 17-year-old male developed a unilateral BRAO in conjunction with inflammation and increased intraocular pressure. Family history was positive for cerebrovascu...
